Family Therapy

Family therapy is an evidence-based and widely used psychotherapeutic method that views the family as a system, where all parts are interdependent. This means that when one family member is experiencing difficulties, all members are affected and involved. The aim of family therapy is to foster mutual understanding, emotional support, and closeness within the family. Traditionally, the focus of family therapy is on communication between family members, relationship quality, different developmental crises, and how to cope with them.

More About Family Therapy

Family therapy is suitable both in crisis situations and for addressing long-standing problems. It is also used when mental health issues affect the family system. In the case of children’s or adolescents’ problems, involving the family is an essential step. Family therapy provides a safe environment to express difficult emotions, understand each other’s experiences and perspectives, become aware of each other’s needs, and identify the family’s internal resources—ultimately creating change in relationships and overall life.

Family therapy is primarily conducted in a conversational format, giving each family member the opportunity to express themselves openly and be heard. The therapist uses various techniques to help shift communication patterns, problem-solving approaches, and role dynamics within the family.

The frequency of sessions depends on the nature and urgency of the problem. Sessions can occur weekly or every few months. Ideally, all household members or those involved in the issue should participate. Sometimes therapy may start with just one or two family members, which can still positively impact the whole system—because when one person changes, others inevitably do too. After assessing the situation, the therapist may decide to focus specifically on the couple’s relationship. During the first session, it’s wise to agree on the number of meetings and therapeutic goals.

A typical family session lasts 90 minutes.
