Lymphatic Massage

Lymphatic massage, or manual lymph drainage, is a gentle, surface-level massage that affects the skin and subcutaneous tissue. It stimulates lymph flow and encourages the elimination of waste products from the body. It relaxes, eases muscle tension, and is beneficial for swelling, circulation disorders, and metabolic conditions.

Lymphatic massage is used, for example, to relieve swelling in the lower limbs, varicose veins, or narrowed lymphatic pathways (including pregnancy-related swelling). It’s also suitable post-surgery and during recovery from injuries.

The massage begins at the neck. Movements are light, spiral, circular, and pumping. Lymphatic massage does not cause pain or redness. Too much pressure can actually hinder lymph flow.

Lymph circulation slows down during sleep, physical inactivity, exhaustion, and monotonous physical work. It can also be impeded by blockages in the lymphatic system, inflammation, or cold exposure. If it slows down too much, waste fluids accumulate, pressing on tissues and nerve endings. Massage helps push waste toward the blood vessels for removal, cleansing the body.

Lymphatic massage consists of four main techniques and their variations. The choice of technique depends on the type and severity of the swelling.
